BOTOX® 101: What Causes Dynamic Wrinkles and Other Facial Changes?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is intended to treat specific signs of aging on your face, known as dynamic wrinkles. For many people, these dynamic wrinkles may be the earliest signs of aging that they notice, starting in their 20s and 30s. These lines are primarily linked to muscle activity, as opposed to environmental stressors and intrinsic aging that cause other wrinkles to develop. Dynamic wrinkles can be seen while the face is in motion and usually occur on parts of the face where the skin is thinner and the muscles are used constantly during daily life, such as around the eyes, forehead, and mouth.

When we make habitual facial expressions—such as smiling, frowning, or squinting—or when we talk or chew, our facial muscles contract and pull the skin out of its resting state. At the same time, the skin is gradually losing collagen, resulting in it growing thinner and less elastic over the years, so it becomes less able to spring back to its original position as easily once the muscles relax again. The constant movement leads to deepening dynamic wrinkles that can be visible all the time, as well as asymmetry, facial imbalance, and other irregularities. These facial changes can make patients look older than they actually are, as well as tired, angry, or unapproachable.

How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Work?

Many people in the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas have heard about BOTOX®, but might not know all of the benefits of the treatment. Our patients at South Jersey Skin Care and Laser Center often ask questions such as “What is BOTOX® made of?” and “How does BOTOX® work?”

BOTOX® is a prescription injectable made with small, diluted doses of a protein called botulinum toxin type A, used for smoothing wrinkles.

The purified protein works by temporarily relaxing the muscles that contribute to major facial lines and wrinkles. BOTOX® does this by preventing the signal that would otherwise cause the muscles to contract from being received. If the message does not arrive, the muscles don’t move and the skin stays smooth instead of pulling into folds and lines.

Interaction of nerve and muscle under normal circumstances
Nerve signals are blocked reducing the muscles ability to contract and cause wrinkles

BOTOX® Details: BOTOX® comes from bacteria that create a simple protein, similar to how mold produces penicillin. To create BOTOX®, manufacturers sterilize and freeze-dry this protein, two peptides joined by a disulphide bond, which is later reconstituted when ready for use by a dermatologist or other medical professional. Once injected, the protein impacts specifically targeted nerves that control muscle contraction and relaxation. The botulinum toxin type A in BOTOX® prevents messages from the nerves from reaching the muscles, thereby stopping them from contracting. The nerves absorb the BOTOX®, after which the muscle is relaxed for a period of months. This effect fades gradually as the protein is broken down by the body into its basic peptides. *

Your BOTOX® Consultation

Before beginning your treatment, you will be assessed during a personalized consultation to determine whether BOTOX® is the best option for you and where you would benefit from the injections. We will also discuss your medical history, including any previous cosmetic treatments you have had, to help you decide whether BOTOX® is the right choice.

This is an excellent time to share with your injector what it is you are hoping to accomplish with your visit and your goals for cosmetic treatments. You can also ask any questions you may have about BOTOX® or other aesthetic dermatology options available. This is when you’ll get to know your injector better, and they will advise you on everything that’s involved during each step of the BOTOX® procedure.

Which Areas Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Treat?

BOTOX® is primarily used to address the upper portion of the face, and the injections are precision targeted to impact only the key muscles that cause lines and wrinkles to form and appear between and above the eyebrows. BOTOX® Cosmetic applications typically focus on the corrugator supercilii and procerus muscles in the forehead and the orbicularis oculi to the side of either eye. These muscles create frown lines and crow’s feet, respectively. BOTOX® is FDA-approved for moderate to severe glabellar lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet, but we also use it for several off-label applications. It is commonly used on other muscles to treat aesthetic problems that range from downturned corners of the mouth and eyebrows to neck bands. It can also shape the jaw for a slimmer look, smooth the chin, and reduce muscle-related wrinkles and bulges under the eyes.

Some people are interested in other uses, such as injections to relax the trapezius muscles, reduce underarm sweat, or manage migraines. South Jersey Skin Care does not offer these treatments, but we can explain more about how BOTOX® works to those who are curious.

Botox treatment areas by dermatologist Dr. Levin in New Jersey

Dr. Robin Levin is experienced in administering BOTOX® for New Jersey patients looking to address wrinkles or a number of other aesthetic conditions on their face. The most commonly treated problems at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center are forehead lines that show up as creases when we raise our eyebrows, frown lines that appear when we scowl, and crow’s feet that web out from the corners of our eyes, especially when we squint. Since BOTOX® works by stopping chemical signals from reaching their intended destination, it is also effective for temporary treatment of: *

  • Low eyebrow: Eyebrow shaping requires a skilled hand. Dr. Robin Levin uses BOTOX® to coax muscles into positioning an eyebrow that doesn't sag, but also doesn't sit too high.
  • Bunny lines: These are creases that appear when the nose is wrinkled. BOTOX® can prevent the underlying muscle that causes them from contracting.
  • Lip lines: These are vertical wrinkles that run radially round the mouth but soften or disappear when treated.
  • Gummy smiles: Many people don't want to reveal much of their gums when they smile, and BOTOX® can prevent their upper lip from retracting too far.
  • Dimpled chin: Overactive muscles can create the appearance of divots in the chin, but they can be relaxed.
  • Neck bands: Surgery can help to address the loss of chin and neck contour, but BOTOX® offers a temporary solution for patients looking to address the lines caused by loose and protruding jaw muscles.
  • Downturning of the mouth: Also known as downturned or droopy mouth corners, these create a sad look but can be treated with BOTOX® and coaxed to lift.

What to Expect from a BOTOX® Treatment Session

You might be wondering “What is the procedure like for BOTOX®?”

The treatment takes only a few minutes to complete. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected directly into the muscle layer to impact the nerves below the skin. The process is virtually painless, with some patients describing the injection itself as feeling like a slight pinch. Anyone concerned about the sensation of injections in the target areas can talk with Dr. Levin about ice or a topical numbing cream to be applied before any needles are used. Know, however, that the majority of patients tolerate the treatment quite well and do not need numbing.

Not only does a BOTOX® appointment not take long, but most of our BOTOX® patients from Philadelphia and South Jersey can resume their normal activities right after their treatment. The minimal time commitment, lack of a recovery period, and satisfying results all combine to make BOTOX® a top choice for residents of New Jersey and beyond.

How Long Do BOTOX® Results Last?

Patients report seeing results from BOTOX® in as little as 24 to 48 hours after receiving their injections, once it settles into the targeted areas. If you’re searching for “How long does BOTOX® last?” remember that the effects are temporary, and eventually you will need repeat injections to keep your face looking smooth and refreshed. Under optimal conditions, the effects can last up to four months, during which the targeted muscles will remain relaxed. Throughout those months, expressions involving those muscles—including frowns and smiles—can still be made. They simply will not produce the associated wrinkles and lines, from crow’s feet to forehead furrows. A lack of muscle activity during that time will also prevent such lines from deepening and becoming further etched into the face. Your face will still look like your face, just more energized and younger.

As the BOTOX® effects fade, unrestricted motion will gradually return to the injected regions. Patients may also notice the return of some wrinkling and crinkling when they make certain expressions, but can choose to get another dose of BOTOX® Cosmetic to continue enjoying its benefits. Injections should be made at least a few months apart, but patients interested in multiple or ongoing treatments should talk to Dr. Levin about specific timelines.

There is evidence that repeated BOTOX® use has a preventative effect on wrinkles. In essence, it trains the targeted muscles to relax, which leads to longer-lasting results, an overall softening in the appearance of unwanted lines, and avoiding the formation of additional wrinkles.

How Many Injections Does BOTOX® Require?

The number of injections needed to achieve specific results depends on which area of the face a patient is targeting with BOTOX® Cosmetic. For crow’s feet, Dr. Levin will make two to three injections into muscles that border the eye, for a total of four to six injections when counting both sides. Frown lines involve five total injections, including four into what are known as the corrugator muscles and one into the procerus muscle.

Are There Any BOTOX® Side Effects to Watch For?

BOTOX® is an FDA-approved cosmetic routinely and safely used by millions of patients around the world each year. Side effects are possible, much like any other injection or medicine, but tend to be mild and infrequent. These include bruising and swelling at the treatment area and, in very rare cases, eyelid drooping in patients who were receiving treatment for frown lines (a reported three percent), eyelid swelling in patients receiving treatment for crow’s feet (a reported one percent), headaches, neck pain, dry eyes, and blurred vision.

Anyone with concerning symptoms or questions should call Dr. Levin to discuss the situation. BOTOX® manufacturer Allergan provides materials that explain all of the important safety information and list the known possible side effects.

In general, the results from a BOTOX® treatment for Philadelphia and New Jersey patients last up to three or four months. While BOTOX® is common among plastic surgeons throughout New Jersey, at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center, we are skin specialists led by a board-certified dermatologist, and we understand the complex organ of the skin and the face. We aim to provide every patient with superior service, starting with the initial consultation and continuing through the procedure itself and any necessary follow-up.

Why Choose Dr. Robin Levin for BOTOX®?

Because of its popularity, BOTOX® Cosmetic is readily available far and wide, and patients seeking the wrinkle-smoothing injectable in New Jersey may be faced with many options when it comes to where to find it. Considering the number of people and businesses offering BOTOX®, including salons and now dentists’ offices, these patients may even be wondering whether their choice really matters.

Botox Muscles

Patients thinking of getting BOTOX® are encouraged to make sure that their choice of provider is not only trained in its specific use but has a thorough understanding of facial anatomy. In other words, don’t just type “BOTOX® near me” into your search bar! Consider that there are more than 30 muscles in the human face, each of which has a specific function. These muscles help us to lower or raise our brows, squint, smile, or frown, and create all of the expressions we use to convey emotions every day. The underlying muscles also contribute to the formation of lines, wrinkles, and folds in the skin above.

Dr. Robin Levin’s team at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center understands the layout of facial muscles and how they interact. Their knowledge and experience allow them to safely administer BOTOX® for maximum results by targeting the proper muscles—and only those muscles—for injections. *

Just as there is a difference between taking your vehicle to someone who “knows about cars” as opposed to someone who is trained and experienced in fixing the specific mechanical problem you are facing, there is a difference between receiving a BOTOX® injection from someone who has had a little training as opposed to from a board-certified dermatologist and skin specialist such as Dr. Robin Levin. You don’t want someone who just performs injections as an add-on to their other work. You want a doctor who emphasizes and embodies knowledge, talent, and care.

Dr. Levin

When it comes to BOTOX®, South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center’s Dr. Levin believes in the importance of blending a solid medical background with an eye for aesthetics. Her practice’s slogan, “Where knowledge and beauty meet,” reveals that all of the treatments and procedures performed there represent that ideal.

This is key for several reasons, including safety, beauty, and comfort. As a treatment for crow’s feet, wrinkles on the forehead, and other areas, BOTOX® has done little more than grow in popularity since it was first introduced to the world. Far more than 6 million people now choose the cosmetic each year thanks to its successful track record as a safe and effective means of temporarily smoothing out areas where facial creases and lines would otherwise create an appearance of age, fatigue, and even hostility.

While BOTOX® is routinely administered to patients across the globe in a variety of settings, it is important to remember that it is still a prescription cosmetic that should be injected by a professional. Dr. Levin is well versed in safe practices and has a reputation for impeccable health standards. She can easily and thoroughly discuss the benefits of BOTOX®, as well as the risks and possible side effects, and can answer any questions about safety, BOTOX® cost, and other details.

Patients frequently praise Dr. Levin for her communication, saying she puts them at ease and maintains her compassion even as she discusses technical details.

It is also important that BOTOX® be injected by someone who understands the importance of balance, symmetry, and proportion on a patient’s face. This is not a mere medical procedure, but an exercise in targeting precise muscles in an effort to create a natural-looking, unlined appearance. Dr. Levin couples her thorough understanding of skin and its underlying structure with an aesthetic sense, observing how a forehead looks now and envisioning how it will look after BOTOX® is administered.

Which Skin Treatments Complement BOTOX® Cosmetic?

While BOTOX® is ideal for temporarily treating dynamic wrinkles like bunny lines next to the nose, facial and lip fillers such as the hyaluronic acid-based Juvederm® family are better suited to correct static wrinkles caused by collagen deficiency, plump lips, and fill out hollowed areas farther down on the face. In regard to our clients who look for a more comprehensive anti-aging treatment, we can combine your BOTOX® treatment at our New Jersey practice with other dermal fillers that are custom-picked to address your specific concerns.

The overall effect will be one of youthful, healthy skin that appears free of the sorts of lines and sunken areas that develop as skin loses its natural levels of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Additionally, skin resurfacing treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and microneedling enhance the texture and pigmentation of the skin while encouraging collagen production to improve skin health.

At South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center, our cosmetic consultant assesses each patient as an individual with unique needs and goals, putting together a total anti-aging package that includes not just BOTOX®, but a variety of these other treatments that will work in concert to create a harmonious and fresh, youthful look. Our team is made up of providers who have years of experience, proper training, and quality people skills, and all are committed to upholding our rigorous standards.
