miraDry® vs. BOTOX® for Excessive Sweating
Excessive sweating can interfere with everyday life, causing visible sweat marks, underarm odor, clothing changes, and the constant need for deodorants or antiperspirants. For some people, this is linked to a condition called axillary hyperhidrosis, while others simply want more freedom from perspiration.
miraDry® at NJ’s South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center offers a non-surgical solution designed to permanently reduce underarm sweat glands using advanced microwave energy technology. The treatment can also help reduce odor and underarm hair growth, making it a multi-benefit option for patients who want long-term improvement. For optimal results, we recommend two miraDry® sessions. This can significantly decrease underarm sweating while helping patients rely less on deodorants and antiperspirants. Many patients choose the treatment to improve confidence, comfort, and convenience.
Unwanted sweating, odor, and hair in the armpit region can be reduced quickly and easily with miraDry® at our New Jersey-area practice. Patients can potentially reduce sweating by an average of 82 percent on average, making the process effective for every patient, whether they suffer from excessive sweating or not. This also means it is far more effective than the typical antiperspirant, which only has a 20 percent effectiveness rate, and even clinical antiperspirants are up to 30 percent effective. Patients travel to our practice from across the region for miraDry® treatment, including individuals from Delaware, Maryland, and New York who are seeking a proven, long-lasting solution for excessive underarm sweating and odor.

What Is miraDry® and What Does It Treat?
miraDry® is an FDA-cleared treatment created specifically for the underarm area. The device targets and eliminates sweat glands using thermal microwave energy without surgery or incisions. The treatment may improve:
- Excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis)
- Underarm odor concerns (osmidrosis)
- Sweat staining on clothing
- Persistent perspiration despite antiperspirants
- Underarm hair growth
Because the body contains millions of sweat glands, removing the glands beneath the arms does not interfere with the body’s normal cooling processes.
The FDA first approved the miraDry® system in 2011 to treat axillary hyperhidrosis, and was again cleared in 2015 to permanently* reduce both odor glands and underarm hair.
It is important to note that miraDry® is not approved for use in any area other than the underarms.
miraDry® benefits – Since miraDry® at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center destroys key glands in the underarm area, both sweating and odor are drastically reduced, cutting the need for antiperspirants and deodorants. This can help curb excessive sweating, or simply help a patient stop worrying about sweating altogether.*
To What Extent Do We Need to Sweat?
Whether typical or excessive in nature, the ability to sweat plays an important role in keeping your body cool for thermoregulation, thus helping you to stay healthy. Some patients have expressed concern that destroying the sweat glands in their underarms will prevent them from adequately sweating in the future.
The underarms contain only about two percent of roughly two to four million sweat glands spread all across the body, from the soles of your feet to the top of your head. The vast bulk of these glands contribute to body temperature regulation by producing a clear fluid that cools the skin when it evaporates. These are known as eccrine glands.
Apocrine glands found in the underarm region also produce fluid, but this form of sweat is thicker. It is also the force driving purchases of antiperspirant and deodorant, since it is the culprit behind that distinctive B.O. (body odor) smell, which is generated when the fluid interacts with certain bacteria on the skin and in the environment.
Destroying all the underarm sweat glands still leaves approximately 98 percent of the body’s vital sweat glands functioning properly, as the treatment does nothing to alter how signals are sent to other glands found elsewhere. This amount is more than enough for the body to continue its healthy thermoregulation process.
What Is Axillary Hyperhidrosis?
Many patients ask, “How do I know if I have excessive sweating?”
Axillary hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive perspiration affecting the underarms. Individuals with this condition often sweat more than necessary for temperature control, even while resting or in cool environments.
Common signs include:
- Sweat soaking through shirts
- Frequent deodorant use
- Embarrassment in social situations
- Clothing discoloration
- Ongoing moisture beneath the arms
- Strong body odor despite hygiene measures
Even patients who do not have hyperhidrosis often choose miraDry® because they want to reduce average sweating and enjoy greater convenience.
How Does miraDry® Reduce Sweat?
miraDry® works by delivering controlled microwave energy to the sweat and odor glands located beneath the skin.
During treatment, thermal energy heats and destroys targeted glands while the skin surface remains protected and cooled.
Once sweat glands are eliminated, they do not regenerate.
This means patients may experience long-term reduction in:
- Perspiration
- Odor
- Underarm hair growth
Clinical studies have shown meaningful sweat reduction after treatment, with most patients seeing noticeable improvement after only two sessions. Rarely, in severe cases, we may recommend three sessions to maximize results.
Can miraDry® Replace Deodorant and Antiperspirants?
Many patients pursue miraDry® because they want less dependence on underarm products.
After treatment, patients frequently notice:
- Less moisture
- Reduced odor
- Fewer clothing changes
- Less need for antiperspirants
- Greater comfort during exercise and social activities
Some patients continue using deodorants occasionally, while others find they no longer need them.
Results vary depending on the amount of sweating before treatment and personal goals.
Who Is a Candidate for miraDry®?
miraDry® may be ideal for adults who:
- Experience excessive underarm sweating
- Have been diagnosed with hyperhidrosis
- Feel frustrated by deodorant-resistant perspiration
- Want a non-surgical solution

A consultation at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center can determine whether miraDry® is suitable for your goals.
miraDry® vs. BOTOX® for Excessive Sweating
Patients often compare miraDry® and BOTOX® when researching hyperhidrosis treatment options.
miraDry®
- Permanent sweat gland reduction
- Two treatments are recommended for optimal results
- Reduces odor glands
- Can reduce underarm hair
- Long-term improvement
BOTOX®
- Temporarily blocks sweat signals
- Requires maintenance sessions
- Primarily targets perspiration
- Repeat injections necessary
The right treatment depends on whether patients prefer temporary management or longer-lasting reduction.
Does miraDry® Remove Sweat Glands for Good?
Yes. miraDry® eliminates treated sweat glands.
Patients sometimes worry that reducing sweat glands under the arms could affect body temperature regulation. However, the underarms contain only a small percentage of the body’s total sweat glands.
Most sweat glands remain untouched throughout the rest of the body, allowing normal cooling functions to continue.
The treatment only affects the underarm area and is not intended for other body regions. Results vary depending on the amount of sweating before treatment and personal goals.
What to Expect from A miraDry® Treatment Session in South Jersey
One entire miraDry® treatment session takes about an hour to complete.
Before your treatment session begins, your underarms will be numbed to increase your comfort during the procedure. A member of the South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center team will apply a temporary template to the area that indicates which specific locations the handheld miraDry® device should be placed for treatment.
Once pressed against the skin and activated, the handheld piece will begin to pull the skin slightly, bringing the glands to be treated closer to the device and maximizing treatment effectiveness. A particular type of proprietary microwave energy (known as miraWave energy) directed at the target areas will then non-invasively destroy both sweat and odor glands, while also reducing underarm hair. There are no incisions required. Most patients experience little to no pain during treatment, as the areas to be targeted are numbed in advance.
How Many miraDry® Sessions Are Needed?

The number of sessions varies based on sweating severity and personal goals.
Some patients notice improvement after a single treatment, while others choose a second session for additional reduction.
Unlike deodorants and antiperspirants that require ongoing use, miraDry® offers lasting improvement because treated glands do not return.
Maintenance sessions are generally not expected.
Recovery After miraDry®
Recovery is typically straightforward.
Patients may temporarily experience:
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Tingling sensations
- Temporary altered sensation beneath the arms
These effects usually improve gradually over time.
Many patients are surprised by how little they miss deodorants during recovery because sweating and odor may already be reduced.
