Which Type of Filler is Best for Different Areas of the Face?

Fillers are popular cosmetic treatments because they add valuable volume to the face without taking much time or requiring down time for healing after. Not all fillers do the same thing, however, so even if a certain formulation gives you beautifully contoured cheeks, it might not be the best choice for augmenting the lips—and vice versa. Since there are so many different types of wrinkle fillers at our New Jersey practice, the challenging part for patients can be knowing which brand and type of filler will be the best choice.

First, know that helping you to select the ideal treatment is our job. You don’t have to know which brand and formulation is best suited for lips. If you want a fuller pout, we can tell you what would work best.

That said, it can also be good to have some idea of what is possible. Fillers are formulated with different consistencies, ranging from thin and light to heavy, and each has its own unique abilities. There are certain areas of the face that typical hyaluronic fillers don’t work well to treat—such as around the eyes, in the tear troughs, on the forehead, and on the temples. With that in mind, here’s a basic guide to how fillers are designed for specific parts of the face:

Cheeks

Juvederm Voluma® is the filler often used for cheek augmentation. Patients who are experiencing sagging or loss of roundness to their cheeks can use this injectable to add volume and lift. It can also be used to add definition and sculpt the cheekbones. Voluma® is one of the thickest fillers available. It is injected into a deeper part of the face, and it lasts for up to two years. Its heavy consistency makes it ideal for adding structure and lift.

Mid-Face

In terms of spreadability and strength, Juvederm Vollure is somewhere in the middle: It is fairly robust, but less so than Voluma®, and still allows natural-looking movement. It reduces nasolabial folds and other wrinkles on the middle and lower part of the face.

Lips

Juvederm Volbella® is the most lightweight, soft, and spreadable filler in the line, so it is perfect for minimizing smoker’s lines and other tiny lip wrinkles, adding subtle volume to the lips, and better defining their shape.
