What IPL Treats

“What conditions can IPL treat?” “What is IPL treatment good for?” “What areas can be treated with IPL?” These are some of the many light therapy-related questions our patients ask us.

Limelight IPL targets common skin concerns caused by sun exposure, aging, and vascular changes. IPL treatments can improve:

  • Sunspots and age spots
  • Freckles and uneven pigmentation
  • Broken capillaries and telangiectasias
  • Blotchy or uneven skin tone
  • Facial redness and rosacea

IPL is commonly performed on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, arms, and hands, which are areas most frequently affected by sun damage in New Jersey patients.

Lots of people have asked us questions like, “Is skin discoloration normal with age?” or “Why am I suddenly getting pigmentation?” Most of these changes are caused by sun exposure over time, which triggers melanin production and leads to dark spots or freckles. Sun damage can also weaken capillaries, causing visible red veins on the face and chest. Treatments like IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) are designed to target and reduce these discolorations, revealing clearer, more even-toned skin.

Our latest generation Limelight Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) technology is a powerful yet gentle solution for 2026, 2027, and beyond that targets a wide range of issues, from pigmentation irregularities to facial redness and even hair removal. Whether it’s varicose veins or visible vessels on your cheeks, IPL can help. It’s a go-to, modern treatment for anyone looking to refresh their skin tone and texture without downtime.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) at New Jersey's South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center treats pigmentation irregularities.

South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center uses Limelight for intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments in New Jersey, helping to lighten freckles and sunspots, address overall skin pigmentation irregularities like blotchiness, and clear the redness of rosacea.

How Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Works

Intense pulsed light uses controlled bursts of broad-spectrum light to target pigment and blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. Unlike lasers, IPL is not a single- wavelength device. The Limelight IPL handpiece delivers light that is selectively absorbed by melanin and hemoglobin.

This process causes pigmented cells and vascular lesions to heat and break down naturally. Over time, treated pigment rises to the surface and flakes away, while collagen stimulation helps improve overall skin tone and texture.

Let’s Talk Light: IPL vs. Laser, What’s the Difference?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light):

You might be wondering, “Is intense pulsed light better than laser treatment?” IPL uses multiple wavelengths of light to treat pigmentation and redness across larger areas of skin. It is ideal for patients with fair to light-medium skin tones who want gradual improvement with little to no downtime. IPL is commonly chosen for sun damage, brown spots, redness, freckles, and overall tone correction.

Laser Skin Treatments:

Laser treatments use a single, focused wavelength of light for more targeted concerns, such as deep pigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, or skin tightening. Lasers can penetrate deeper and may require downtime, depending on the device and treatment goal.

At South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center in NJ, our providers help patients choose between IPL and laser treatments based on skin type, concerns, and desired outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions About Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL benefits patients with fair to light-medium skin who have red, brown, or uneven pigmentation caused by sun damage or vascular conditions. It is best suited for individuals who have not recently tanned and do not have light sensitivity, active skin cancer, severe scarring, or keloid tendencies.

IPL is not recommended for patients using retinoids or for individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI.

You can think of IPL like a high-tech flashlight that sends quick bursts of light across your skin. When these flashes hit, they zero in on pigment-producing cells and gently break up those pesky dark spots. It’s perfect for tackling sun damage and brown spots, helping your skin look clearer and more even in no time!

Preparing for IPL involves protecting the skin and avoiding irritation before treatment. Patients should avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanners for at least four weeks prior to treatment. Waxing, chemical peels, laser treatments, and collagen injections should be discontinued two weeks beforehand.

Blood-thinning and photosensitizing medications, including aspirin and doxycycline, should be avoided as directed by your provider. On the day of treatment, arrive with clean skin and avoid makeup, deodorant, perfume, lotion, or fragranced products on the treatment area.

Limelight IPL is generally well tolerated. The handpiece feels cool against the skin, and each light pulse may cause a brief snapping sensation similar to a light rubber band flick. Sensations vary by patient, but discomfort is typically mild and short-lived.

A Limelight IPL treatment typically takes only a few minutes, depending on the area treated. Because no numbing creams or gels are required, most IPL appointments at our New Jersey office can be completed quickly and conveniently, often during a lunch break.

Limelight IPL is a safe, non-invasive treatment when performed by trained medical professionals. It has minimal side effects, requires no downtime, and is gentler than many laser treatments. Larger treatment areas can be treated efficiently with each session.

After Limelight IPL treatment, mild redness may occur and usually resolves within hours to a few days. Pigmented spots may darken and slightly rise before naturally flaking off within one to two weeks. As the skin heals, patients notice clearer, brighter, and more even-toned skin.

IPL results can last months to years, depending on sun exposure, aging, and genetics. To maintain results, maintenance treatments every three to four months are often recommended. Daily sun protection and a consistent skincare routine help prolong results.
