Treat Cellulite with Dimple-Smoothing Injections in New Jersey

More than 90 percent of women are affected by cellulite, a condition that causes lumps, ripples, and dimples to develop in the skin—typically on the thighs and buttocks. People of all sizes, shapes, and BMIs can get cellulite, regardless of how often they exercise or how healthy their diet is. With injectable QWO®, New Jersey’s South Jersey Skin Care can minimize cellulite without the need for invasive surgical techniques or ineffective topical treatments.

What Causes Cellulite?

Cellulite is sometimes described as giving the skin an “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” appearance. Severe cellulite creates pronounced peaks and depressions in the skin while mild cellulite can only typically be seen when you pinch the skin.

The exact cause of cellulite is still not fully understood, but we do know that it isn’t caused by excess fat or loose skin. Cellulite is believed to be associated with the way deeper layers in the skin interact with fat. The problem starts below the surface, where fat cells accumulate between fibrous connective cords (known as septae) that keep the skin above tethered to the muscle layer below.

These collagen fibers are the problem. As the surrounding fat cells are partitioned and constricted by the tight bands, they push outward and upward. Anywhere the skin’s surface can’t move with them due to a collagen band holding it tight, a dimple forms.

Women have a vertical connective tissue structure, which is what makes them more likely to have cellulite than men. While the condition is harmless and treatment is not necessary, QWO® is available for anyone who would prefer to enjoy smoother and firmer-looking skin.

How Does QWO® Work?

QWO® (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) is a prescription medication that contains a combination of enzymes that break down collagen.

As the first-ever injectable treatment to receive FDA-approval for correcting cellulite, QWO targets the root cause of the cellulite. The active ingredient in QWO works enzymatically, using chemicals to release the tense bands of collagen that are pulling down on the surface of the skin. Releasing these bands improves the appearance of the skin. QWO® works specifically on collagen types 1 and 3, which form the septae.

QWO® also helps fat cells to spread out more evenly instead of bunching up and creating outward pressure that contributes to dimpling. It further benefits the skin by encouraging new collagen to grow, making the surface thicker and less likely to reveal texture irregularities like cellulite.

Who Can Benefit from QWO®?

QWO® is approved to treat moderate to severe cellulite on the buttocks of adult women. Anyone who is healthy and has some cellulite they hope to improve could potentially benefit from this injectable option.

What to Expect from a QWO® Treatment Session at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center

It’s important to first have a conversation with your injector during your consultation to share your cosmetic goals and determine whether QWO® is the ideal treatment for you.

During the treatment, your injector will outline the targeted areas with a pen, then inject QWO® directly beneath the dimples in those areas. The number of injections is determined by the provider for optimal results. It usually takes 10 minutes or less for a session to be completed.

There is no recovery time needed after a QWO® treatment, but patients will experience some mild discomfort, bruising, and discoloration at the injection site. These side effects resolve on their own in time. The best results are usually seen after the patient has had at least three QWO® injections spaced three weeks apart.

How Long Do QWO® Results Last?

QWO® dramatically improves the appearance of cellulite, which is not expected to return in the treated areas. The visible results are long-lasting, with the severity of dimpling resolved or greatly diminished.

Other Types of Skin Care and Body Contouring Treatments

While fat reduction is not a cellulite-smoothing treatment option, it is helpful for contouring areas where dimpling tends to develop. CoolSculpting® can reduce fat in many areas of the body, including the thighs and under the buttocks.

Our New Jersey practice also provides waxing and laser hair removal—ideal for keeping skin smooth for swimsuit season—along with laser skin tightening and laser skin resurfacing. Cosmetic dermatology treatments for unsightly veins can also help with anyone who wants their skin to look its best by clearing visible vessels that create a mottled or spiderweb look.
