Kybella® in New Jersey

Double Chin Treatment in Mt. Laurel

Even otherwise trim people can struggle with submental fullness, as the condition is frequently caused by fat that resists weight-loss efforts. While liposuction was long the only choice for patients who wanted this stubborn fat physically removed from their neck area, where it creates what's often referred to as a "double chin," researchers have developed some nonsurgical solutions in recent years. A particularly popular method for both women and men is Kybella®. New Jersey's Dr. Robin Levin added the injectable to her menu of services because it's easy to use, it requires little down time for recovery, and, most importantly, it's effective.

Destroy chin fat with Kybella®
Kybella® destroys fat cells under the chin. Each patient needs different amounts depending on the amount of fat to be reduced, therefore treatment is customized according to individual needs. *

Kybella® is approved by the FDA specifically for use on the area below the chin where fat collects. An American Society for Dermatologic Surgery survey revealed that 67 percent of the respondents said they were bothered by their double chin, putting it on the same level of concern as wrinkles around their eyes.

Benefits of Kybella® Treatment

Traditional lifestyle-altering methods, such as diet and exercise, may not reduce fat everywhere it sits in the body, no matter how committed someone is to losing it. A person may see pounds and inches drop away from the abdomen, buttocks, chest, or arms, only to see a pocket of fat continue to cling to one particular area. The submental region, below the chin, is notorious for this.

A double chin can make men and women alike appear overweight, even if it is the only pocket of fat to be found on the body. Submental fullness can also make patients appear older than they actually are.

Liposuction works by physically suctioning targeting far cells from the body removing them. This reduces the fat, but also requires the expected recuperation and down time necessary after surgery.

Patients looking to reduce troublesome fat cells but avoid an invasive procedure are drawn to Kybella®, as it combines simplicity and effectiveness. Treatment sessions are quick and yield results that last.

How Does Kybella® Work?

The active ingredient in Kybella® is a manufactured form of deoxycholic acid, identical to the naturally occurring deoxycholic acid that helps to break down dietary fat in the human body.

The formula is injectable, so it can be used with precision, applied directly and specifically to the unwanted submental fat.

Once introduced, Kybella® attacks the fat cells, rupturing them. The process is known as cytolysis, which destroys cellular membranes. This destruction releases the fat within the cell, and the body's natural elimination systems will handle it from there. The rate at which fat is freed and processed ensures that the treatment is a safe one.

Patients will begin to notice their double chin receding in the weeks and months after their initial Kybella® treatments.

Since fat cells are destroyed, the ultimate Kybella® results are considered as long term, and a need for new treatments after completing a course and enjoying its effects is not expected. New weight gain can alter the look of reduced submental fullness, though fat accumulation should appear in a different form or location than before. Results are best maintained by continuing to live a healthy lifestyle that keeps the whole body slim and trim.

Note that the efficacy and safety of Kybella® were the subject of exhaustive research efforts. Professionals have conducted more than 20 clinical studies into the injectable, involving more than 1,600 people around the world.

The Problem With Fat

Unwanted fat can be difficult to lose. Changes to eating habits and increased physical activity require commitment, and even then results are not guaranteed. This is because fat may collect in certain areas due to genetics, not necessarily because of a person being overweight.

Of course, traditional methods of fat reduction have their benefits—especially when it comes to health—but even in the best of circumstances there are also some drawbacks for patients.

Standard weight loss via a combination of diet and exercise shrinks fat cells, but does not reduce the total number of them in a particular area or throughout the body. Cells that have reduced in size due to careful planning and dietary adjustments are left to potentially grow larger again if given the opportunity.

Destroying unwanted fat cells, as Kybella® does, removes them from the equation. They will not grow in size again later because they no longer exist.

What Specific Areas Does Kybella® Treat?

While stubborn pockets of fat can form in various areas of the body, the FDA has approved Kybella® only for treatment of submental fat. For now, Kybella® is only for men and women who want to address their double chin.

Note that deoxycholic acid is very powerful and can destroy the membranes of any cells where it is injected. Because of this, it is vitally important that patients seeking Kybella® choose a trained and skilled provider to ensure maximum safety and aesthetic results. Only professionals with experience in targeting fat cells below the neck should handle the injections, since they understand the anatomy of the area, particularly the muscles and nerves.

A board-certified dermatologist operating a practice staffed by certified physician and nursing assistants, as well as licensed medical aestheticians, will offer the ideal environment for Kybella® injections.

Dr. Levin uses only Kybella® made by Allergan (also the manufacturer of BOTOX® Cosmetic and other popular and trusted cosmetic treatments) at South Jersey Skin Care and Laser Center. This brand was subjected to rigorous safety tests and has an established history of scientifically proven results. Its continued application and growing list of patients satisfied with their results testify to its reputation.

How Many Kybella® Treatments Are Necessary?

The full scope of a recommended series of Kybella® treatments depends on the patient, so the only way to determine how many injection sessions are necessary is to schedule a consultation and discuss aesthetic goals. Many patients are pleased with natural-looking results after two to four sessions, each given at least a month apart. Some find six Kybella® sessions are required to reduce their double chin to their satisfaction.

Each session may involve up to 50 injections in the submental area, though a single Kybella® injection session will last only about 15 to 20 minutes, including the application of ice to reduce patient discomfort.

Is Kybella® in New Jersey Right For Me?

This fat-reducing injectable is ideal for men and women alike who are looking to reduce their submental fullness. Good candidates:

  • are dissatisfied with the look of their double chin
  • prefer a minimally invasive treatment to surgery
  • are healthy and have realistic expectations of their results
  • openly explain their aesthetic goals during their consultation

Patients who have an infection in the under-chin area should wait until it clears before getting injections. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who plan to be soon, should discuss their condition with their doctor. Also, anyone who has had aesthetic or medical surgery in the region below the chin should inform their injector.

Are There Any Side Effects?

While studies and repeated use have shown that Kybella® is a safe product, some patients have reported some side effects at the injection site, including swelling, bruising, and redness.

Side effects are mild enough that patients frequently choose to return to the regular routine of their daily activities immediately after their session, and no specific down time is necessary.

Post-treatment pain management is not generally needed, though some patients opt to ice their injection sites to help minimize any discomfort felt in the days after a session.

Kybella® Cost

Since the scope and number of treatments are variable depending on the patient, costs will vary from person to person and are best discussed at the time of your consultation.

Alternatives and Complementary Treatments to Kybella®

Other injectables available at Dr. Robin Levin's practice include BOTOX® Cosmetic, which temporarily relaxes muscles to smooth out certain facial wrinkles, and Juvéderm®, which fills in wrinkles to rejuvenate the face.

The injectable Voluma® in particular can enhance Kybella® results, since the filler is designed to add volume to the apple area of the cheeks. In addition to rounding out sunken and flattened areas there, the restored volume can lift fallen skin lower on the face, pulling up jowls and tissue that hides a well-defined jawline.

Weight loss can effect skin elasticity and present as loose, or even hanging skin that changes the structure of facial features. Ultherapy® employs ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen growth, and while this is not a fat reduction method, it can tighten loose and sagging skin and tissue above and below the chin, creating a slimmer, sleeker look. Since Kybella® only addresses submental fat, the two treatments pair well together for patients whose look of a double chin is due to both fat cells and excess skin in the area.

The South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center team can help each patient get the best results possible by starting with a thorough consultation and recommending the appropriate treatment or treatments.
