Does the Injector Matter for Lip Augmentation?
The lips are some of the hardest-working parts of the body. They are a part of every word spoken, every smile and frown, and even every kiss. Because of their spotlight role, they can get a lot of attention, which can be welcome if someone is confident in how their lips look, but uncomfortable if they are not. Thin lips can be a problem, but there is a simple solution for lip augmentation at NJ’s South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center.
Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Robin Levin has particular experience with members of the RHA® line, choosing them for their reliability and natural-looking volume. Lip augmentation can also be used to smooth out lip lines around the mouth, further emphasizing the area’s youthful look.
Many patients seeking lip enhancement want results that look soft and balanced—not “over-filled.” During your consultation with our Cosmetic Consultant, Tara Avallone, LME, you’ll talk through your goals (subtle definition, more volume, better symmetry, or smoothing of fine lines) so we can tailor a plan that fits your features. Whether you’re new to lip injections or maintaining prior results, we prioritize proportions that complement your face from every angle.
2026 Update on Lip Augmentation Techniques
Today’s lip augmentation approaches emphasize natural movement and refined shaping, using advanced micro-droplet placement along the vermilion border and body of the lip. This careful technique supports a hydrated, pillowy look while preserving your individual lip shape.
What Causes Thin Lips?
Luscious, shapely lips are a feature many people desire—but not everyone has them. Lip augmentation is a popular solution for enhancing thin lips, whether caused by genetics or aging.
Some individuals naturally have thinner lips, making lip augmentation an appealing option to create fuller, more balanced proportions. In other cases, lips lose volume over time as collagen production declines, leading to a thinner appearance and less definition.
Collagen plays a key role in maintaining lip structure, hydration, and elasticity. As it diminishes, fine lines and wrinkles—often called “smoker’s lines”—can form around the mouth. Sun exposure, smoking, and repeated lip movements can accelerate this process. Lip augmentation can help restore lost volume while softening these lines.
Daily factors like dehydration or lip licking may make lips appear dry, but they don’t affect true volume. While topical products provide temporary hydration, lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers offers longer-lasting enhancement and shape.
Maintaining hydration, using SPF, and avoiding smoking can help protect lip health. When combined with lip augmentation, these habits support smoother, fuller-looking lips over time.

What Is Lip Augmentation?
Treatment Options and Goals
Lip augmentation is a cosmetic treatment designed to enhance the size, shape, and overall appearance of the lips. The most common method involves hyaluronic acid fillers, which are injected beneath the skin to add volume, improve definition, and create a smoother, more youthful look.
Hyaluronic acid is a soft, moisture-binding substance that helps plump the lips while maintaining natural movement and texture. In lip augmentation, these fillers can be precisely placed to increase fullness, correct asymmetry, and enhance lip contours.
While dermal fillers are widely known for reducing wrinkles, they are also the leading choice for lip augmentation due to their versatility. Treatment benefits may include:
- Adding volume for fuller, more shapely lips
- Improving lip balance and symmetry
- Smoothing fine lines and lip wrinkles
- Enhancing lip shape and definition
- Softening the appearance of scars
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid fillers offers customizable, natural-looking results tailored to each patient’s goals.
RHA®
Modern options for lip enhancement include flexible hyaluronic acid gels designed for expressive areas. The RHA® collection, for example, is formulated to adapt to movement, which is especially important for the lips. RHA® 2 and RHA® 3 can softly define the cupid’s bow, enhance the vermilion border, and add hydration and volume to the lip body with a smooth, natural feel. They stretch and rebound with expression, helping lips look smooth at rest and in motion.
Since hyaluronic acid is biocompatible and reversible, these treatments are adjustable over time. We can build your results over multiple sessions for maximum control and comfort.
BOTOX® Lip Flip
Some patients also benefit from a BOTOX® lip flip, another minimally invasive, injectable lip augmentation treatment, which uses tiny amounts of neuromodulator to relax the tense muscles that pull the upper lip inward. As the muscle relaxes, the upper lip gently rolls outward, increasing the visible height of the lip without adding actual filler volume. This can be a great option for patients who want a subtle, shapelier, or more defined look or wish to enhance results from lip fillers.
BOTOX® can enhance the shape of the lips, reduce a gummy smile caused by an upper lip that recedes too much, and reduce wrinkles around the lips. The effect is subtle and typically sets in within a few days, peaking by about two weeks, and gradually wearing off over several weeks. It’s a helpful option for patients who show extra gum when smiling or who want a more defined lip edge without extra filler.
Combining treatments for a refined result: Many patients benefit from a small amount of filler for volume plus a BOTOX® lip flip for shape. We will recommend the right blend based on your anatomy and goals.
How Does Lip Augmentation Work?
Mechanism and Technique
Lip augmentation uses injectable fillers to restore volume and mimic the role of collagen in the lips. Most fillers are made with hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance that attracts and retains moisture to keep tissues hydrated and supported.
When placed precisely, HA fillers add structure, hydration, and softness—helping lips appear fuller, smoother, and more defined. Lip augmentation can enhance lip shape, improve symmetry, and restore volume lost due to aging.
Modern lip fillers are lightweight, flexible gels designed specifically for delicate areas like the lips. This makes them ideal for subtle lip augmentation, refining the lip border, and smoothing fine lines around the mouth.
What You Can Expect
Lip augmentation is a quick, in-office treatment focused on precision and natural-looking results. After cleansing the area, your injector uses a fine needle or microcannula to place small amounts of filler.
Targeted placement may include:
- Vermilion border (lip outline) for definition
- Lip body for volume and fullness
- Philtral columns for cupid’s bow enhancement
This technique helps improve symmetry while maintaining soft, natural movement when speaking and smiling.

Your Lip Augmentation Treatment at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center
Consultation and Customization
Every lip augmentation treatment begins with a personalized consultation with our Cosmetic Consultant, Tara Avallone. Your provider evaluates lip shape, facial symmetry, and overall balance to determine the most effective approach.
During this visit, you can discuss your goals—whether you want subtle volume or more defined, fuller lips. Lip augmentation is fully customizable, allowing filler to be placed in the upper lip, lower lip, or both, with precise control over volume and shape.
Most hyaluronic acid fillers used in lip augmentation contain lidocaine to improve comfort. A topical numbing cream may also be applied to further reduce sensation.
Lip augmentation is a quick, in-office procedure, typically completed in under 30 minutes. There is little to no downtime, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. For those who prefer gradual results, treatment can be performed over multiple sessions using smaller amounts of filler.
Pre- and Post-Care Tips
Proper care before and after lip augmentation helps optimize results and minimize side effects.
Before treatment:
- Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning supplements (like fish oil) for 24 hours, unless directed otherwise
After treatment:
- Expect mild swelling and tenderness for 24–72 hours
- Apply cool compresses as directed
- Sleep with your head elevated the first night
- Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, and facials for 24–48 hours
- Do not massage the lips unless instructed
Results timeline:
You’ll notice immediate improvement after lip augmentation, with final results settling over the first week. A touch-up can be scheduled if needed once swelling resolves.
Does the Injector Matter for Lip Augmentation?
Safety and Aesthetic Judgment for Lip Enhancement
Absolutely! Remember: Lips are very visible, so it is important to choose an experienced injector who will make the results of a lip augmentation session appear natural, not puffy or overdone. The goal for lip augmentation is to maintain ideal proportions between the lips—upper and lower—so that the rejuvenation harmonizes with the rest of the face.

At South Jersey Skin Care, we focus on technique, anatomy, and sterile practices to help reduce risks like bruising or swelling. We also take a conservative, layered approach so your results can be refined over time.
How Long Does Lip Augmentation Last?
Longevity and Maintenance
Eventually, any hyaluronic acid fillers will be metabolized by the body, but this process happens gradually, and the substance won’t just suddenly completely dissolve. The lifespan of lip augmentation depends on the type of formula that is used, how much of it you get, and the location of the fillers.
It’s impossible to avoid facial movement, and since the muscles around the mouth area are very active when we talk, chew, make facial expressions, and go about daily life, lip fillers tend to break down at a faster rate than fillers used elsewhere on the face. Though results are temporary, they are still long-lasting. Lip augmentation patients can expect to enjoy their fuller lips for between six months and one year, after which they can get a new set of injections to keep their lips looking healthy and young.
What influences duration: Individual metabolism, activity level, and how animated your lips are can affect how long results last. Many patients schedule maintenance visits every 6 to 12 months for fillers. If you choose a BOTOX® lip flip, expect a shorter duration—often about 6 to 8 weeks—making it a nice option for testing a subtle shape change or fine-tuning definition between filler visits.
As hyaluronic acid fillers are dissolvable with an enzyme administered by a clinician, results can be modified if necessary. We will discuss all options during your consultation so you feel confident in your plan.

Lip Augmentation FAQs
You may be a candidate if you want to enhance lip shape, improve symmetry, or soften fine lines and are in good general health. We typically do not treat patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. A consultation will help determine the best approach for your needs.
Lip fillers add volume and structure using hyaluronic acid. A BOTOX® lip flip relaxes the muscle at the lip line, so the upper lip gently rolls outward, creating the appearance of a slightly fuller, more defined lip without adding volume. Some patients choose one or the other; many combine both for tailored results.
This varies by anatomy and goals. First-time patients often start conservatively—sometimes with about 0.5 to 1 syringe—then build over time as desired. Your injector will guide dosing based on your lip dimensions and balance with other facial features.
Temporary swelling, tenderness, and small bruises are the most common effects and usually resolve within a few days. Rare risks such as vascular occlusion are minimized with careful technique and anatomy-guided placement. You’ll receive instructions on what to watch for and how to reach us if you have concerns.
Arrive well-hydrated and avoid alcohol the day before. After treatment, use cool compresses as directed, limit strenuous activity for 24 hours, and skip saunas or hot yoga until swelling settles. Avoid pressing or massaging the lips unless instructed. Most patients return to routine daily activities right away.
Results are visible right away, with lips softening and integrating over the next week. Most lip fillers last 6 to 12 months; a BOTOX® lip flip often lasts several weeks. Maintenance visits can keep your look consistent throughout the year.
Yes. Because most lip injections use hyaluronic acid, results can be adjusted by a qualified medical professional using an enzyme if needed.
