Men and BOTOX®: What You Should Know

Here is a basic overview of what the treatment does and how it can be used to turn back the clock for men:

Many of our most common facial wrinkles, especially those found in the upper third of the face, are called expression wrinkles or dynamic wrinkles. These develop because of constant facial movements that squeeze and stretch skin cells. When we’re younger, our skin easily snaps back into place, but as we get older, it loses its elasticity and no longer bounces back as easily. Eventually, more pronounced wrinkles begin to show. These wrinkles are most visible when our face is animated.

BOTOX® is a purified, diluted form of a neuromodulator derived from bacteria called clostridium botulinum. The injectable received FDA approval for cosmetic use about two decades ago. Once injected, BOTOX® relaxes the active muscles that cause expression wrinkles to form and deepen.

Injections are made in small doses into the muscle, which blocks the neurotransmitters that cause the contractions associated with various facial expressions. By relaxing the area, BOTOX® stops wrinkles from forming or deepening.

Men and BOTOX®: Why Are Men Seeking BOTOX® Treatments?

Sometimes referred to as “Brotox,” BOTOX® for men has become an increasingly popular option as interest in the injectable has grown. Cosmetic injectables to reduce wrinkles are some of the most popular anti-aging options for all people—not just men—and BOTOX® is considered to be the gold standard for softening wrinkles for good reason.

The most common motivation associated with men seeking BOTOX® is addressing signs of aging. The neuromodulator not only reduces existing wrinkles but also prevents new ones from developing. There is often a desire to maintain competitiveness against younger coworkers in the workplace among men, and BOTOX® can help with that goal. Furthermore, wanting to look one’s best on social media and dating apps is one of the reasons why there’s a higher demand for these treatments among men—and BOTOX® can help with that as well. The quick, non-surgical solution to wrinkles is appealing for multiple reasons—and it won’t require any recovery time.

Men and BOTOX®: Who is a Candidate?

Men who have moderate to severe wrinkles in areas neuromodulators can address, are in good general health, and have realistic expectations will be the best candidates for the treatment. If you are allergic to any ingredient the product contains or have a skin infection, nerve or muscle disorder, or a severe illness, you may need to consider a different strategy for getting a rejuvenated look.

Our Approach to Men and BOTOX®

Here’s what you will need to know about men and BOTOX®:

Dr. Robin Levin gives each patient personal attention for cosmetic procedures. This is no different when it comes to men and BOTOX®. Since she does not believe in a “one-size-fits-all” cookie-cutter approach, she can create a custom treatment plan designed to enhance an individual’s unique and natural look. This is especially key when working with BOTOX® and men, since men tend to be direct in explaining the look they want: refreshed, confident, and distinguished.

Trends show that while women would like to entirely get rid of their wrinkles, men prefer to soften their lines or even leave a few. The thinking behind this is that a few subtle signs of age create an air of authority—as opposed to youth that can be linked to inexperience. A thoughtful forehead wrinkle, or a smooth brow with a hint of fine crinkles to the side of either eye is more desirable to some men than an overall unlined face. It’s common for male patients to opt to have botulinum toxin injections on the glabella (the area of skin above the nose and between the eyebrows), on the forehead, and for wrinkles that form at the outer corners of the eyes called crow’s feet.

The ultimate goal for men seeking this type of wrinkle injection is to get a refreshed look that indicates vitality. It is not so much erasing years off your appearance as it is projecting an impression of health, energy, and having had a good night’s sleep. At the hands of a highly trained and experienced injector, injections can be delivered with precision and an understanding of how the effects of a BOTOX® treatment will impact not just the targeted area, but the entire face.

BOTOX® is injected and set quickly—in as little as 10 or 15 minutes—so an appointment at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center can last no more than the length of a lunch break. No anesthesia is necessary.

Men and BOTOX®: What Are Recovery and Results Like?

When it comes to men and BOTOX®, the procedure is just as simple and straightforward as it would be for female patients. Since the minimally invasive cosmetic does not require any recuperation or downtime afterward, men can get their injections, then choose to return to the office to finish out the workday. Results will become increasingly apparent in the week after your treatment session. This is a temporary treatment, with the results lasting for up to four months. Muscle function returns gradually, so follow-up treatments can be scheduled well in advance as desired to maintain results.

Beyond Men and BOTOX®: What Other Cosmetic Treatments Are Available for Men?

Other treatments, such as dermal fillers, can address wrinkles on other parts of the face, as well as add volume to places where collagen and fat loss has led to a hollow or gaunt look. CoolSculpting® CoolMini®, a non-surgical fat reduction treatment, shrinks the submental fullness that causes a double chin, yielding more defined contours and a more angular jawline. Laser hair removal is also a popular choice for men who want to address large areas that would be better off bare, like the shoulders or back.

Any and all of these options can be combined to help you present the best you possible to the world.
