Benefits of Ultherapy® Treatment
As the only FDA-cleared non-invasive procedure for skin lifting, Ultherapy® produces natural results that continue to improve over time. Some patients see an initial effect right after treatment, but the real results appear over two to three months as new collagen builds.
The FDA-cleared procedure uses safe and time-tested ultrasound technology to stimulate natural collagen production deep within the skin, lifting and smoothing lines from the inside out.
The results achieved with Ultherapy® are unmatched by other non-invasive cosmetic procedures. The main benefits include:
- Lifting and tightening of skin on the face, neck, and chest
- Improved and more even skin tone
- Smoothed lines and wrinkles
- Reduced facial jowls
- Lifting of drooping eyebrow line
- Pore size reduction
How Does Ultherapy® Work?
The in-office procedure is performed by our licensed medical aesthetician, Tara Avallone, a renowned expert in the medical and aesthetic field. She currently holds a position as an Aesthetic Leadership Community member where she is actively sought after for her opinion and expertise, helping to shape the direction of the aesthetic industry as a whole. South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center is a preferred choice for Ultherapy® in South Jersey, and patients can trust their care will be in the best hands.
During the procedure, our aesthetician will place a device directly over the skin, similar to traditional ultrasounds. There is no harm to the skin's surface and no need for topical creams, needles, or toxins, though ultrasound gel applied to the skin ensures that the device glides smoothly along. While the device is over the skin, ultrasound imaging reaches the deep foundational layers, giving our licensed medical aesthetician a clear visual of the treatment area, allowing precise targeting for optimal results. Ultrasound waves then deposit focused energy that causes the skin to contract and tighten. The process stimulates the body's own collagen production and regeneration, known as neocollagenesis, which over time results in lifting and tightening of the skin.
The collagen-building process that is stimulated naturally then gradually lifts tissue over the course of two to three months and beyond. Even so, some patients are able to see immediate improvement! South Jersey Ultherapy® patients can expect their results to be most dramatic between three and six months following the procedure, although patients will continue to experience improvements in their skin a year after treatment. It's worth noting that the skin does continue to age naturally, and some patients prefer to return for follow-up procedures to maintain their results. Alternatively, South Jersey patients who opted for a facelift or other more intensive cosmetic procedure can utilize Ultherapy® to maintain or prolong the positive effects of these procedures without requiring a more intensive procedure.
Since Ultherapy® relies on the body's unique ability to produce collagen, results will vary per patient. Although new collagen will be stimulated inside the body, the natural aging process will determine how long patients are able to see visible results on the outside.
Ultherapy® treatment can be completed in one session. The length of treatment varies per individual, with a typical face and neck treatment lasting between 60 to 90 minutes. A treatment focusing on the chest may last for about half an hour. Most patients usually need one treatment to experience significant results.
The skin experts behind Ultherapy® note that since every patient is different, some may benefit from multiple treatments in their efforts to achieve ideal results. Also note that Ultherapy® doesn't freeze time, or its impact on your appearance. While you continue to age, your skin will, too. Talk to Dr. Levin about maintenance Ultherapy® treatments that can help you to keep a fresh, rejuvenated, and youthful look well into your future.
What Specific Areas Does Ultherapy® Treat?
New uses are always being developed for Ultherapy®, so its aesthetic impact on the body will continue to expand. You can always talk to our licensed medical aesthetician to discover what the latest and most beneficial treatment areas are and learn what a collagen boost could do for your skin. Here are just some of the regions on the face and body that can benefit:
You may also consider this area to be the throat. It's where sagging skin can create the appearance of wattles, also known as turkey neck. While it's entirely natural for the neck to develop sagging skin during the aging process, and many patients express discomfort with this fact, they often resort to wearing turtleneck shirts and sweaters to conceal their neck. We've got nothing against turtleneck shirts, but would prefer that our patients wear them as a choice rather than to hide areas of dissatisfaction.
Under the Chin
Fat isn't the only thing that can contribute to the look of a double chin. Loose skin that sags here can also help to hide an otherwise defined jawline. While the chin might not seem like an especially important facial feature, the reality is that it plays a vital role in creating a frame for your face. A combination of Kybella® treatments, which dissolve fat under the chin, and Ultherapy® to tighten sagging skin could very well be the perfect combination.
Drooping skin beneath the eyebrow can cause a heavy-lidded look that can generate a tired or even irritated expression. While many New Jersey patients are aware of the benefits of cosmetic procedures such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers in helping to achieve a more youthful face, sometimes the actual problem is sagging skin—a dilemma South Jersey patients can easily resolve with Ultherapy®. Patients interested in potentially combining Ultherapy® with other nonsurgical procedures such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers should schedule a consultation to discuss this possibility.
This region is known as the décolletage, stretching from below the neck to the tops of the breasts. It may also technically include the shoulders, though any sagging to be lifted by Ultherapy® would appear in the cleavage area. Like the skin beneath the neck, patients who endure sagging in this area might be tempted to simply change their wardrobe to conceal any areas they consider problematic. But we'd prefer that our patients didn't have to make those types of fashion decisions. Thanks to Ultherapy® as a quick, noninvasive treatment, South Jersey patients can continue dressing the way they feel rather than responding defensively to signs of aging.
During the procedure, patients will feel microscopic amounts of energy being deposited into the skin, but the sensation is only felt during the procedure, which lasts anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the treatment area. The sensation is sufficiently minimal that Ultherapy® does not require or involve any needles, ointments, or topical anesthetics.
Afterward, some patients may experience mild redness or flushed skin, but these effects should subside within a few hours. Temporary tenderness, tingling, or swelling can also occur.
Since the non-surgical approach relies on the body's own collagen-building process, there is no downtime or recovery period. Many patients can immediately return to their daily activities, as post-procedural care doesn’t require anything special: Simply take care of yourself and enjoy the increasingly visible positive effects. Most Ultherapy® patients report that they immediately resumed their usual routine following the procedure. The effects are so mild that friends and family likely won’t realize a patient has had anything done, unless the patient chooses to share that information.
Why Does Ultherapy® Focus on Collagen?
Collagen is a major component of healthy, young-looking skin. The protein's main job is often described as one of support, given that it lends both strength and flexibility to organs and tissues all throughout the body, including bones, tendons, and cartilage.
Dermatologic research has shown that collagen production in the skin begins to drop steadily each year after we turn 20. By the time we are in our 40s, our skin is no longer making the vital protein. What collagen is there begins to thicken and stiffen, leading to skin that easily shows the wear and tear of daily life.
Flexibility is a key characteristic of tight, firm skin. When the outermost layer ceases to "bounce back" after changes that happen underneath, including volume loss and decreasing levels of other important chemicals, a variety of aesthetic transitions begins: wrinkles form, tissue sags and droops, and more.
Using Ultherapy® to rejuvenate collagen production is like recruiting a helper that brings out the best in your skin. The method is known as neocollagenesis, and it helps to restore an attractive plumpness to skin, as well as adding resilience and durability. New collagen returns to the places where it's needed throughout the skin, rebuilding a supportive matrix of structural flexibility. This lifts sagging areas and helps to fill out creases.
The beauty of Ultherapy® is that it relies on our body's natural tendency to heal itself; the ultrasound energy deposited beneath the skin is merely the catalyst for this healing and the subsequent improvement in skin tone and elasticity. And because Ultherapy® makes use of ultrasound imaging, the administrator can actually see the layers of tissue during the process to ensure the energy is delivered to the areas where it will be of the most use to each particular patient.
Ultrasound energy is uniquely qualified to help stimulate this natural healing process because it reaches depths not accessible by other noninvasive cosmetic devices. While lasers rely on light energy, which can't achieve the combination of depth and temperature needed to produce the best possible results, ultrasound energy can accomplish this for New Jersey patients via a quick, noninvasive treatment session.
Ultherapy® Safety & Risks
Ultherapy® uses tested and reliable, FDA approved ultrasound imaging, also known as sound energy, which has safely delivered more than 250,000 treatments worldwide. Ultrasound energy has been safely used in the medical field for more than 50 years, and the basis for the technology is rooted in more than 200 years of scientific experimentation and study. The science behind Ultherapy® technology has been used to diagnose medical conditions and give parents a first glimpse of their children for decades, and it's now benefiting patients who yearn to lightly turn back the clock.
As noted above, some patients may experience a flushed redness for a few hours after their Ultherapy® treatment. Some temporary and slight tenderness, tingling, and swelling is possible. Less common is bruising and numbness on a small patch of skin, though, again, these effects fade.
Rare post-treatment side effects may occur, but our licensed medical esthetician will review these with you during your free consultation and answer questions to help you make an informed decision. Know that every Ultherapy® treatment provider undergoes in-depth training in administering the procedure.
Is Ultherapy® in South Jersey Right For Me?
The procedure is ideal for patients who want to turn back the clock without going under the knife, or who simply are too busy to take time off for post-surgical recovery. Patients suffering from less firm or mild to moderate sagging skin, especially around the eyebrow line, jowls, and neck, will typically experience the best results.
A consultation at South Jersey Skin Care & Laser Center will help you to determine whether Ultherapy® is the best choice for you. Our team of skin experts will work together to understand your ultimate goal for your appearance and tailor make a plan that may incorporate several different compatible treatments.
Many patients are under the impression that certain cosmetic procedures won't benefit them because they're in the wrong age group. While most Ultherapy® patients are in their 30s and older, everyone ages uniquely, and adult patients of any age—male or female—who would like to reclaim their youthful skin are welcome to schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss the potential advantages of Ultherapy® for their particular needs.
As with any cosmetic procedure, whether surgical or noninvasive, it's essential that patients communicate their goals, concerns, and questions early on in the process to ensure that Ultherapy® is, in fact, the best method of achieving their particular goals. Generally, patients with realistic expectations and more information going into the procedure are more likely to be satisfied with the results.
Additionally, your Ultherapy® administrator will want your medical history, including a list of current medications. New Jersey patients who are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant may want to wait before scheduling an Ultherapy® consultation, as pregnancy results in hormone shifts that can change skin, which may not produce the best possible results.

Ultherapy® in the News
Despite the fact that Ultherapy® is relatively new to the cosmetic scene, the procedure has already been recognized by celebrities, publications, and annual awards for its unique ability to nonsurgically roll back the clock.
In 2014, Ultherapy® was named "Best In-Office Treatment" in NewBeauty's 2013 Beauty Choice Awards—an annual competition in which thousands of NewBeauty readers, editors, and beauty experts vote for their favorite cosmetic procedures of the year.
In 2015, Ultherapy® won a second NewBeauty award, this one for "Best Skin Tightening Treatment," likely due to the fact that Ultherapy® is the first FDA-approved skin tightening and lifting treatment that can be used on the face, neck, and skin.
Additionally, a number of writers and celebrities have chosen to make Ultherapy® a part of their beauty regimen, sharing their motivation and results with the world.
Alternatives and Complementary Treatments to Ultherapy®
While there are no comparable non-invasive alternatives, patients with severe skin laxity looking for longer lasting and more dramatic results may benefit from a surgical facelift.
Patients with deep wrinkles or severe lines looking for targeted solutions with minimal downtime could benefit from FDA-approved injectable fillers such as Juvéderm®, Radiesse®, and Belotero®. BOTOX® Cosmetic is also an injectable, though it works to prevent wrinkles from appearing as opposed to filling them in.
Ultherapy® is very compatible with laser treatments, which are used to treat sunspots, fine lines, large pores, uneven skin texture, and wrinkles, as well as redness and scars. Lasers are an effective choice for surface-level rejuvenation.
Many patients wonder about the cost of treatment, which depends on the individual's goals and physician practices. We recommend contacting us or scheduling a free consultation so we can discuss your personal goals and needs.
Patients who are particularly concerned about cost should know that Ultherapy® is a significantly less expensive alternative to a more intensive procedure, such as a facelift. Because the procedure is quick, minimally invasive, and doesn't require intensive aftercare, it's almost the equivalent of a less intensive facelift without the cost of surgery.
